About

This is a Rubik’s cube solver. It’s not just any Rubik’s cube solver though, it’s my Rubik’s cube solver. And by that I mean, it solves Rubik’s cubes the way I solve them – uniquely.

Why

I never learned how to properly solve a Rubik’s cube. I was given one for Christmas as a kid and informed the right way to solve it was layer-by-layer. It never occured to me that I could learn how to solve a toy on the internet, so I just messed around with the thing for a day or two, slowly picking up patterns and sequences of moves that would move parts of the cube around without destroying others. I slowly put these sequences together and worked my way up (down in my case) to a fully solved cube. Over the years I’d notice even more patterns, and the result is sortof my own, un-influenced technique for solving it.

This is a visualizer of that technique: the stages I go through, the sequences of moves I make, the orientation I hold the cube in when making those moves, the extra moves that are clearly pointless, the backtracking I have to do when I get stuck, and all the other oddities. And yes, I really do start with the green side first (it was my favourite colour as a kid).
